La contaminación del aire por la quema de combustibles fósiles principalmente carbón, petróleo y gas, está detrás de alrededor de 4,5 millones de muertes anuales en todo el mundo y genera unas pérdidas económicas estimadas en 2,9 billones de dólares, lo que equivale a aproximadamente un 3,3% del PIB mundial. Así lo revela un informe elaborado por Greenpeace y el Centro de Investigación en Energía y Aire Limpio (CREA).
Esta organización ecologista recuerda que los sectores del transporte y la generación de energía eléctrica son los principales causantes de la contaminación atmosférica y exige a los gobiernos que tomen las medidas necesarias para limitar el uso de combustibles fósiles y evitar así que la población siga respirando un aire tóxico.
“Pero es un problema que sabemos cómo resolver: evolucionando hacia fuentes renovables de energía, poniendo fin a los coches diésel y gasolina y fomentando el transporte público”,
añade Minwoo Son, responsable de la campaña Aire Limpio en Greenpeace para el Sudeste Asiático.
Actualmente, los combustibles fósiles, son la principal fuente de energía. Cerca del 80% de la Energía que se consume en el planeta proviene del petróleo, el gas natural y el carbón. Cómo ya sabemos estas representan un recurso valioso para el hombre, pero también representan un alto porcentaje de contaminación para nuestro planeta, quien sufre las consecuencias de nuestras necesidades.
La producción de energía con estos combustibles resulta ser una de las más contaminantes, liberando gases como el dióxido de carbono (CO2), el óxido nitroso (N2O), el metano (CH4), siendo así una de las causas principales del efecto invernadero.
A medida que crece la preocupación sobre la contribución de los combustibles fósiles al calentamiento global, la energía solar es una fuente de energía cada vez más atractiva, ya que genera cero emisiones y su suministro es infinito. La energía solar también ofrece beneficios financieros. Su costo general está disminuyendo y, en muchas áreas, ha alcanzado el nivel de las fuentes de energía tradicionales. Es menos susceptible a los precios volátiles de la energía, proporcionando ahorros futuros, y es elegible para una variedad de créditos fiscales y de energía renovable, así como otros incentivos.
